Ship (nautical) Terms

There are several terms that are used on the ship often. It is very important to know these terms, otherwise you may not know your way around. Although I am on the ship through the University of Virginia, the captain is in charge on the ship; therefore, we use his lingo. This means that we use military time (24 hours in a day). Here are a few terms that can help you get started:

The BOW is the front of the ship.
The STERN is the back of the ship.
The AFT is the area near the back of the ship.
The WAKE is the water that is churned behind our ship.
The WASH is the water that is pushed aside on the sides of the ship (the wake of the sides).
The PORTSIDE is the left side.
The STARBOARD side is the right side.
