My First Day in Belgium

On my first day in Belgium, my friends and I explored throughout the city. We noticed that all of the streets in Antwerp were constructed out of stone. Every part of the road, including the lines designated for the lanes were made out of stone. In order to signify where lanes were, as well as pedestrian pathways, they had different colored stones that looked just like the colors you would use with paint on normal streets. It was very charming!
My friends and I went to the Church of Our Lady. It was very beautiful. The church was located in a big town plaza where you can find an assorted number of shops. One street away from the church is the town hall plaza. This plaza is much more open. There is a large fountain in the middle emulating their town’s hero. There is also town hall which displays dozens of flags from around the world. There is also a place in this plaza where you can get a horse and carriage ride; these horses however, are much larger than ours back home!
We also found another plaza that had many different outside cafes. We ate a place called Frites Max, which is a place that a local recommended for us.

He said that they have the best fries in town. We had some fries there, with mayonnaise, because this is something that Belgians are famous for. The fries were very thick, similar to steak fries in the United States. They were cooked in a different oil, so that they were a little sweeter. You can choose from a variety of different sauces, such as ketchup, sweet and regular mayonnaise, curry ketchup, and many others. I tried the curry ketchup out of curiosity, and it was too spicy for me!

We walked along the different alleyways and found antique shops, Indian shops, bookstores, music stores, and a grocery store. We bought Belgian chips in the grocery store (Lays produces different varieties of chips based on which country that you are in). We also went to many chocolate shops!
