Interview with Interport Student Jeffrey Odame-Koranteng


Q: How do you pronounce “Ghanaians”?

A: “Ghan –ians”

Q: How many schools do you attend through primary school?

A: Lower primary (1-3), upper primary (3-6), junior high (7-9), senior high (9-12) You call the grades classes.

Q: Why do you go to boarding school your senior year?

A: You go there for most of senior high. You are sent there to be made more independent. It is in the town, or it can be in another region. You can go to a single sexed school or mixed. You take a BECE (basic educational compulsory examination) exam after junior high school. You need to pass it for a certain degree, and that’s how you can get into the certain schools. You have the option of first choice, second choice, and third choice, and the government places you in one of them.

Q: How many colleges do you have?

A: Approximately 5 major public universities, and about 20 private universities.

Q: Do you go to preschool?

A: It’s the same as kindergarten.

Q: Do you have kindergarten?

A: They do have it, but its separate. You start when you're three years old. Age (3-5)

Q: Do your elementary teachers teach all subjects, or do you have specific subject teachers?

A: Different teachers for each subject. Even in grade 1.

Q: Do you have lockers in your schools?

A: In private schools, but very few. It isn’t common.

Q: How many people are in each class?

A: 50 children in a classroom, with one teacher  and that’s a private school.

Q: What was your favorite subject growing up?

A: “English, because I always passed.”

Q: What kind of tests do you have to take throughout school?

A: There are tests at the end of every term.

Q: do you have community college?

A: They do not have that.

Q: Marking periods?

A: September-December, January-April, May-July called “terms”

Q: What breaks do you have?

A: Three weeks for Christmas (every school can change this), a month during second term (mid April to mid May), no school in August.

Q: How does lunch work?

A: They offer it in school, but you can bring food as well.
