Fun Facts About Cadiz!


· The city of Cadiz, Spain is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in Spain!
· Cadiz is considered to be a travel and vacation destination for many Spaniards.
· The most popular beach in Cadiz, La Playa de la Caleta, resembles Havana, Cuba. Because of this, the Cuban scenes from James Bond: Die Another Day were filmed here.
· Cadiz, Spain is “twinned” with many cities around the world, including Buenos Aires, Havana, Montevideo, San Juan, and Veracruz, to name a few. Twin cities, or sister cities, were created after World War II. The purpose of this was to create an agreement between different cultures in order to form an understanding as an act of peace.
· The city of Cadiz was founded in 1104 BCE by the Phoenicians. 
· Cadiz’s Old Town has many narrow alleyways that lead to various central plazas in the middle of dozens of buildings.
· Cadiz has tourist routes painted on the roads.
               
· Cadiz is the largest province in Spain.
· There are 130,000 citizens.
· Cadiz is the last port before traveling to the New World, and the first port when returning from the New World.
· In the 18th century, it was the most important city in Europe, and maybe even the whole world because of its location.
· Until the 1940s, men and women attended separate beaches. Women and children attended the beaches closest to the city.
· In the past ten years, Cadiz has lost a significant amount of their population because many citizens have been moving out. Flats in Cadiz are twice as expensive as the flats in San Fernando, which is only seven miles away; therefore, many younger people are moving outside the city.
· The Phoenicians introduced the numeric system and the use of coins, then the Romans brought their version.
