Ghanaian Markets

Markets are more than just the buying and selling of products. Although both of these interactions happen at the markets, many more things happen as well. At the market, new relationships are formed. The shop owners will want to give you a good deal so that you can tell all of your friends to go to that market, as well as to return there yourself. So in order to do this, the shop owners will usually give you a complimentary gift with your purchase. This gift makes you feel special, and will make you want to come back just to that shop owner.

Markets are also used as a calendar. Many Ghanaians are illiterate, so they may not be able to read a calendar. Markets move every certain number of days. So, by counting the market days, you can figure out what day it is. Markets are also a place for a man to find his spouse, based on which woman works hard and runs a very good business.
