Service Visit: Projecto Axe

On my last day in Salvador, Brazil, I went on a service trip with Semester at Sea to Projecto Axe, which is located in the old town section of Salvador. In order to get there, we walked from the ship to the elevator in town that takes you to the upper town, and walked a few blocks once we were up there. Projecto Axe is a non-profit organization that aims to get children off of the streets in Salvador. The program started in 1990 and has served around 16,000 children so far. Each year, the project helps between 900 and 1,200 children to better their lives. There are three sections of the project which are devoted to art and fashion, music, and dance. The project strives to connect with the children’s families to help better their home lives. Many children have benefited from this program, and even have graduated from college. While we were they, the children performed for us. A few girls sang, there were interpretive dances, as well as capoeira performances.
