Field Programs!

Three weeks from today I will be on an adventure of a lifetime. In order to ensure that I will enjoy every second of it, I have tried to plan something for each port-of-call on my itinerary. Unlike some of the voyagers, I am not planning every single day out. However, I want to make sure that I am familiar with each country, and have at least one thing planned for each so that my time is not wasted there. Many of the countries that I am traveling to, I may not ever get the opportunity to travel to again. I want to ensure that I do not miss out on anything! I have looked at travel books, as well as googled great trips to do in certain countries. This is what I have signed up for so far:

London, England
  • I'm planning on buying an express ticket for the London Eye upon arrival 8/22 or 8/23
  • Stonehenge morning tour (Premium Tours) 8/23
St. Petersburg, Russia
  • Walking tour of St. Petersburg and Hermitage Museum (SAS) 8/29
  • Whites Night Canal Cruise (SAS) 8/29
  • I'm planning on taking a night train to Moscow 8/30-8/31
Hamburg, Germany
Antwerp, Belgium
  • I'm planning on buying a train ticket for Amsterdam 9/13 and then a train ticket to Brussels 9/14
Le Havre, France
Dublin, Ireland
  • Galway Day: Land and Sea (SAS) 9/22
  • I'm planning on taking a trip to Blarney Castle 9/23
Lisbon, Portugal

Cadiz, Spain
  • Gibraltar: A Day on the Rock (SAS) 10/1
Casablanca, Morocco
  • Evening with a Moroccan Family (SAS) 10/5
Accra, Ghana
  • Service: Morning Star School (SAS) 10/17
Cape Town, South Africa
  • Township Homestay--Group A (SAS) 10/26
  • I'm also planning on doing an overnight elephant safari 10/28 and shark cage diving 10/29
Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • Fiesta Guacha (SAS) 11/14
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Prainha Beach (w/ snorkel) (SAS) 11/21

Tick Tock...The Countdown...

It is starting to really sink in. I leave for London in 37 days. I keep talking about how excited I am to everyone I come across, but the low number of 37 days, slightly more than a month, is really starting to sink in to my loved ones. It has not occurred to me until now that i will be gone for four months...that is a third of a year, sixteen weeks, one hundred nineteen days...That is an incredibly long duration to be away from those who care for you most. Not only will I not see them, but our correspondences are limited to emails; a few lines here and there saying that I am okay and all is well. I was simple ignorant to the fact that people are generally very concerned about me being gone.

How is everyone coping? --differently.
My mom is the most distressed. She is scared that I will be away for so long and so far away. Being away at college in America is extremely different than being away at college at the sea, around the world. I will have limited communication, no weekends off, as well as no holidays off. But fear not, I'll have my Turkey Day at sea! I am not sure how to comfort her, and I feel guilty for being so excited.

My boyfriend is coping by trying to stay focused on staying busy and working while I am gone. Him and my mom have it tough, especially worrying about me with many independent trips I want to do. I am a thrill seeker, the last thing they want is for me to die while away...

My best friends are thrilled for me. They are so excited, but so sad I cannot see them. They cannot be happier for me, so they want to see me as much as they can before I leave--perfect support that I need!

So 37 days... it may seem like a lifetime, but with all that I still have to do, it is not enough time!!!

My General Education Courses That Are Anything But General!

I planned to study abroad since I graduated from high school. I met with my study abroad adviser my first semester of college, which is when I mapped out what semesters I would take certain courses. I found Semester at Sea, and I looked through the upcoming voyages. I fell in love with the itinerary, and decided to map out my courses so that I could travel on the Fall 2013 voyage, and transfer my credits for courses that I needed to fulfill. I looked at the potential courses for my voyage, and noticed that many sciences and philosophies were offered (http://www.semesteratsea.org/voyages/fall-2013/courses/) I decided that I would take my 2 sciences and 2 philosophies during my Fall 2013 voyage. These are the courses that I chose:

1. BIOL 1559-502 Marine Biology
--Field Lab: Whale watching in Cape Town, South Africa.
--Course Description: http://www.semesteratsea.org/courses/marine-biology-field-lab-in-cape-town/
--This is the course that I am most excited for!! I love animals, and I love the water. In addition, the field lab allows me to whale watch when whales are migrating past the tip of Africa-perfect timing!

2. EVSC 4559 Earth's Changing Climate
--Field Lab: Observe how areas in Morocco are adapting to the climate changes that are occurring.
--Course Description: http://www.semesteratsea.org/courses/climate-change/

3. PHIL 1510 Philosophy of Human Nature
--Field Lab: Two choices! 1:Tour around Dublin, Ireland with places linked to many philosophical thinkers. 2. Go to a museum and a cathedral in Antwerp, Belgium, and link it to the Christian view of afterlife.
--Course Description: http://www.semesteratsea.org/courses/philosophy-of-human-nature/

4. PHIL 2510 Global Ethics
--Field Lab: Two choices! 1. Experience being toured around by the blind and visit an art museum in Hamburg, Germany. 2. Spend the day at the White Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco.
--Course Description: http://www.semesteratsea.org/courses/global-ethics/

Things To Consider & Questions Answered

As my voyage approaches, I have so many different concerns that come to my mind. Are my visas being processed? Did I fill out all the correct paperwork? Did my loan go through? What should I pack? Will I have enough room? What should I do in each port?

With all these concerns, I cannot wait the few weeks that remain until I debark South Hampton in England. I just want to pack up all of my things, and take off!!! The closest thing I could compare preparing for this voyage is like planning for a wedding. There has been months of planning involved. A lot of money has been spent to ensure that the day is as magical and life-altering as I dreamed. The day is now approaching, and I am so nervous about whether or not it achieves my high expectations. But in the end, when the day comes, it will be something that changes my life for the better and something that I can live and learn from for the rest of my lifetime.

I will now answer the questions I posed above for those of you considering a SAS voyage, or for those of you who are following my voyage :)

Are my visas being processed?
-Yes. If you are nervous about your visas, feel free to call the Travisa office and ask the status of your order. They are very friendly and understand your concerns!

Did I fill out all the correct paperwork?
-Keep in touch with SAS. When you fax your information over, email their office and ask if they need anything else. Print out a calendar of when things are due and cross them off when you complete them. You do NOT want to miss this voyage because of missed paperwork. Keep on top of your deadlines!

Did my loan go through?
-This has been a huge concern for me. I filled out my loan for my voyage mid-May. I have been waiting on my school to approve it for two months now. Keep in contact with your home institution so that they understand your situation. Ask them to put you as a priority because you are not on campus with them for that semester--it makes a huge difference! Also, make sure SAS understands how your home institution is handling your finances. You do not want to be billed for things that are out of your control.

What should I pack?
-In order to get ideas of what to pack, I looked at the SAS recommended packing list. I also googled "Semester at Sea packing list". Many blogs came up with previous SAS members about things they packed, wished they did not pack, and wish they did pack. It gives you a great perspective on how to plan for what to wear, what to launder, and ideas about the voyage itself. I have found these blogs to be very helpful! I will be posting my packing list within the next few weeks.

Will I have enough room?
-I tried looking at the SAS site for anything I could find on room layouts. They have basic pictures for each deck formation, however there are also 360 degree visual tours which are quite helpful. In addition, there is also a video that tours the MV Explorer. Feel free to check out the deck plans at http://www.semesteratsea.org/our-ship/deck-plans/. Also, I will be decking on Deck 3 economy, so my room will be set up something like this:
Try finding a room mate before your voyage. Check Facebook for your voyage; there are usually different groups created for finding room mates, adventures, and many other things! Once you find your room mate, discuss things you both plan on bringing so that there are not any duplicates. As far as how to ensure you have enough room in your bunk, look at dorm organizers. I found an $8 closet organizer at Target. It is extremely compact and light weight, so I do not have to worry about wasting my packing space.

What should I do in each port?
-This is probably what all of you are most concerned about (because we often forget that we will be having classes!). Look at the excursions that SAS sets up. Although some trips may be expensive, some of them are one of a kind. Jot down the trips you are interested in doing in each port, and google some of the most expensive trips. There are some trips that you can find cheaper on your own, some are cheaper through SAS. Try to take advantage of the SAS homestays and volunteer opportunities, because they are especially known for these. In addition, the alumni rave about these opportunities the most! As far as what else to do, go to your local library and take out books for the countries you are not familiar with. In addition, research travel agencies and groups for your ports of call. For example, Can Do Land Tours is pretty famous in Africa. There are also free tours in certain cities at http://www.neweuropetours.eu/. If there is something that you are interested in doing, do not be afraid to google it or ask alumni about it. You are most likely not the only one interested in it, so ask around or find a Facebook page about it.

Cuba, Here I Come!

I grew up watching I Love Lucy. I observed the comedic dynamics between and American and  Cuban. Although this television show was created and aired many decades before I was born, I still very much enjoyed the culture that Ricky exhibited every episode about Cuba. Whenever I asked my parents about Cuba, they could tell me very little about this mystery country. As I grew older, I found out that I could never visit this country. In addition, I learned in my American history classes about the Cuban Missile Crisis during JFK's presidential term. I learned that things are not as simple as when you are a child, and you really cannot go everywhere you want in the world. But now, all of this has changed!!!
I WILL BE GOING TO HAVANA, CUBA!!! I will be traveling to the birthplace of an actor who I watched throughout my childhood. I have to thank Semester at Sea for working with Cuba and the United States to establish a partnership. How many people from the United States can say they traveled to Cuba??? Few to none! This is truly going to be an experience of a lifetime! Five more months until a childhood dream comes true!

National Treasure

Watching National Treasure makes me want to do all of these amazing things in different countries too!

Pre-Voyage Jitters

With only 51 days until I leave for England, there is so much to be done! The voyage starts on August 24th, only three days before my birthday. Will I even have a birthday? It is now time to start planning for an event. At that time, I will be in between London and Saint Petersburg; sounds amazing, right? It is, I cannot deny that. However, will I have made lifelong friends with by then to share the start of my new decade?

Anyways...51 days until I leave the country. Other than work, I have to prepare for all of the ports we will enter. What will I do when I get there? Should I plan independent trips? Should I stay in a hostel? Will I have enough room in my luggage? So many questions, and so little time to answer them!

Check out my voyage!
